The Weight of Waiting

waiting comes with a certain

heaviness, an anxiety

seconds tick as hours

one day, a year

a week, a decade

months millienia

the import of the answer

compounds the pressure

magnifies minutes

weight presses inward

waiting tests all bonds

of sanctity and sanitiy

soldier's V-mail home

fiancé's letter to the trenches

mother's prayer for a sick child

writer's manuscript for the editor

gambler's trifecta on the horses

first elementary love note

a birthday party, election results

medical tests, contests

the weight for each unbearable

impossible to calculate

how wait equals weight

in the mind

upon the heart

on time itself

growing with each

and every passing breath
